It came home on him sharp and sweet—a cheap peach bodyspray from a gas station bottle. I knew the scent. I'd just never smelled it on my husband's collar before. I married into the Steel Scars nine years ago, and the rules of the cut were simple. You don't ask a patch holder where he spent his night. You don't dig for wounds you can't stitch. And above all, you never let the other old ladies see you bleed. So I kept my mouth shut. I wiped down the bar, counted the till, and watched the man half this valley bowed down to cross my floor like he owned the ground beneath it. I told myself the scent was just stray smoke. Then I figured out whose leaky roof he'd really been fixing on those late-night runs. Elena. His fallen brother's widow. The woman I'd spent three years keeping alive with my own hands after the highway patrol delivered her worst nightmare at dawn. I brought her soup on Tuesdays. I held her through the quiet nights when the silence got too loud. I loved her like blood. And in her dark living room, buried under a grief I couldn't touch, she'd been taking the pieces of my husband I'd been starving for across our own dinner table. Nobody laid a hand on anybody. That's the lie they keep hiding behind—as if a line not crossed in the dark makes the betrayal any softer. Devon went down hard on Devil's Pass, a stretch of asphalt he knew by heart and only had to misread once. The charter buried him with full colors and called it a tragic spill. But the deeper I dig into what my husband and Elena were really keeping secret, the less their story holds together—and the more I realize I'm the only one who didn't see the real wreck coming. I know what the charter does to an old lady who steps out of line. I know the price of walking away, the toll of sticking around, and the reality that a man like Jax doesn't get humbled by a simple I'm sorry. So I'm done waiting for apologies. He wants me to put this behind us. He hasn't realized yet that forgiving a man and forgetting where his hands have been are two entirely different debts—and only one of them is getting paid.
