By the age of eleven Alfonso had lost both parents, the family home was destroyed by Nazi bombing, and he and his brother were left to face the world together. One family among many caught in the mayhem of war, occupation and its aftermath. And yet, what has followed, even to this day, seems to mirror those earlier events with striking familiarity, as though history has never truly loosened its hold. At eighteen, he leaves Florence, a city still bearing the scars of war, and travels to London – a place alive with opportunity and change. The next two decades offered a diverse range of experiences, shifting constantly against the backdrop of a Western world in transition.
