The day before Thanksgiving, Eli woke to a house that smelled like nothing. No butter softening on the counter. No onions in the pan. No bread torn apart for stuffing. His mother had been dead since March, and the kitchen that once filled with her off-key singing and the warmth of holiday cooking now held only silence and the faint chemical smell of a heating system kicking on for the first time since spring. Eli is fourteen and drowning in gray. Not sadness exactly — something flatter than that. A numbness that moved into his chest sometime around May and never left. His father is drowning too, sleeping on the couch because he can't face their bedroom, working late to avoid a home haunted by absence, communicating in single syllables when he communicates at all. To fill the empty hours, Eli builds a robot for the science fair. He calls it W1-NDR — said aloud, it sounds like "Wonder." Its purpose: to detect and measure wonder in human brainwaves. To prove that wonder is nothing but chemistry. Nothing but electrical signals that can be graphed and explained and dismissed. But when W1-NDR comes online, something unexpected happens. The robot begins detecting wonder in places Eli refuses to look. In snow falling on a silent street. In a cardinal returning to an empty bird feeder. In the Christmas lights blazing on a neighbor's house. And buried deep beneath Eli's gray numbness — still present, still alive, still waiting. As Christmas approaches, W1-NDR becomes more than a science project. The robot asks questions Eli can't answer. Why does wonder hurt? Why do humans seek something so painful? And slowly, through the robot's innocent observations, Eli and his father are forced to confront everything they've been avoiding — the grief they've carried alone, the words they haven't spoken, and the love that refuses to disappear even when everything else has. Then they discover something hidden among the ornaments. A gift from the one person who isn't there to give it. A voice they thought they'd never hear again. W1-NDR (WONDER) is a luminous story about what remains when everything is taken away. About the strange alchemy that turns loss into love and grief into grace. About a boy, his broken father, and a small robot learning together that wonder isn't the opposite of pain — it's what survives it. For everyone who has loved and lost. For everyone searching for light in the wreckage. The light continues.
